Women embracing a man

A collaborative study between the labs of Dr. Maureen Su and Dr. Tim O'Sullivan identified the X-linked epigenetic regulator UTX as a key driver of sex differences in NK cell antiviral activity. These findings mirror the clinical observation that males tend to have worse outcomes after viral infection despite having more peripheral NK cells, leading to important implications for personalized medicine and cell therapy.

Dr. O'Sullivan suggested that in the future, immunotherapy treatments may be derived from women.

This study was published in Nature Immunology and featured on the cover of the May 2023 issue as well as a feature on Salon.
